Liverpool’s opponent in Merseyside derby is a Premier League side called Everton. The Merseyside derby is arguably one of the most intense derbies in English football, but it didn’t start out that way. On the contrary, the Merseyside derby started out as the most friendly derby in English football, as many families in Liverpool had both Liverpool and Everton fans in their homes.
In the early days of the First Division, Everton had the same glorious history as Liverpool. Liverpool won the top flight for an incredible 18 times, while Everton won the top flight 9 times. Everton also won their fifth FA Cup trophy in their history in 1994/1995. It was only after this that Liverpool received an injection of money from an international consortium and the gap between the two teams widened. However, although the Merseyside derby is not as exciting as it used to be, the Everton faithful still expect their team to beat Liverpool when the Merseyside derby comes around.
In the last six meetings between the two sides, Liverpool have a slight edge with two wins, three draws and one loss. The two sides met for the first time in the Premier League this season on 2 December 2021 BST, with Liverpool beating Everton 4-1 in that match. According to the fixture schedule, the two sides will also meet for the second time in the league this season on 23 April this year at Liverpool’s home ground Anfield BST.
