Samuel Umtiti joined Barcelona on 30 June 2016.In order to bring Umtiti from the well -known Ligue One side Lyon,Barcelona had to pay €25 million at that time. Umtiti made his La Liga debut in Barcelona’s 6-2 win over Real Betis in the first round of the 2016/2017 La Liga season, which was played on 21 August 2016. In his first few seasons with Barcelona, Umtiti’s performances did justify the transfer fee Barca paid to get him. With his performances at Barcelona, Umtiti earned a call up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia from France national team manager Didier Deschamps.
What no one could have imagined was that the World Cup would be a major turning point in Umtiti’s career. Before the start of the World Cup, Umtiti was actually suffering from a knee injury, which was one of the reasons why FC Barcelona did not want him to play at the World Cup. But in order to pursue his dream of winning the World Cup, Umtiti went ahead and played with the French national team at the 2018 World Cup. As a result, Umtiti did achieve his dream of winning the World Cup, but his risky move also led to frequent injuries to his knee in the following years. Plagued by injuries, Umtiti’s game also began to decline.
This is why Barcelona, who are not in a good financial position at the moment, offered to extend Umtiti’s contract until 2026 on 10 January 2022 on the condition that the club would unilaterally terminate his contract if he did not accept a reduction in salary. In the end, Umtiti accepted Barca’s offer of a reduced salary in exchange for remaining at Barcelona. But in the coming years, it is not clear whether the “nail-biter” Umtiti will still be recognised by Barca for his strength.
